Acoustic coupler

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000039

A device that converts electrical signals into sound waves and vice versa, allowing data transmission over a standard telephone line by placing a telephone handset onto the coupler. While largely superseded by digital modems, early geophysical data transmission from remote field sites sometimes relied on acoustic couplers. This technology was common before widespread internet access.
