Pore-pressure transmission
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002868
The process by which hydrostatic pressure from the drilling fluid column is transferred through the filter cake and into the pore spaces of the adjacent rock formation. This phenomenon occurs when the filter cake has some degree of permeability, allowing the mud filtrate to invade the formation. A high rate of transmission can reduce the effective stress on the wellbore wall, potentially leading to instability in chemically sensitive shales.
