Alligatoring

A form of paint or coating failure characterized by a pattern of cracks resembling alligator skin, caused by the uneven expansion and contraction of the topcoat over a less flexible undercoat. This condition indicates a loss of elasticity in the surface layer. Alligatoring often occurs due to improper application or aging of the coating.
