Barrel vault

A continuous arched structure forming the ceiling or roof of a building, resembling the interior of a cut-in-half barrel. This architectural form distributes weight evenly along its length to supporting walls. It is a common feature in Romanesque and Gothic architecture, providing a strong and simple overhead covering.
