Barreling
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000436
The outward bulging of the sides of a workpiece during a compression test, caused by friction between the specimen and the platens. This deformation occurs because the material at the contact surfaces is constrained from flowing freely, while the material in the center can expand laterally. Barreling is a common observation in uniaxial compression tests of ductile materials.
