The quantity of thermal energy required to increase the temperature of one pound of liquid water by one degree Fahrenheit. It is a standard measure for rating the capacity of heating and cooling systems, such as furnaces and air conditioners, and for quantifying the energy content of fuels. One BTU is equivalent to approximately 1,055 joules, and one therm, a common unit for natural gas billing, equals 100,000 BTU.
