Commutation
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001265
The process of switching the direction of current flow in the windings of an electric motor or generator to maintain continuous rotation or power generation. In DC motors, a mechanical commutator and brushes perform this action, reversing the current in the armature coils as they pass magnetic poles. Modern AC motors often use electronic commutation through power semiconductor devices.
