Counterfire

A fire intentionally set ahead of an advancing wildfire to consume fuel and create a barrier that the main fire cannot cross. This tactic, also known as a backfire, requires careful planning and execution to be effective and safe. It is a controlled burn designed to reduce the intensity and spread of a larger, uncontrolled fire.
