Backfire

An unintended explosion or combustion that occurs in the intake or exhaust system of an internal combustion engine, rather than within the combustion chamber. This can be caused by improper fuel-air mixture, ignition timing issues, or faulty components. In wildland firefighting, a backfire is a controlled fire set to consume fuel in the path of an advancing wildfire.
