Debismuthization
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001607
The pyrometallurgical process of removing bismuth impurities from lead bullion. This refining step is necessary because bismuth negatively affects the mechanical properties of lead, making it hard and brittle. The Betterton-Kroll process is a common method, involving the addition of calcium and magnesium to the molten lead, which form intermetallic compounds with bismuth that float to the surface and are skimmed off.
