The unauthorized interception of private communications, such as telephone calls, email, or other data transmissions. In an electrical context, this can involve physically tapping into a line, capturing radiated electromagnetic signals, or exploiting security vulnerabilities in a network. Passive attacks monitor traffic without altering it, while active attacks involve modifying or injecting data into the communication stream.
