A permanent loop formed at the end of a rope or wire by splicing, seizing, or using a swaged fitting. An eye splice is created by weaving the end of a rope back into its own standing part to form the loop. When used with a shackle or pin, a metal thimble is fitted inside the loop to protect the rope from chafe and distribute the load.
