Hardground
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002731
A cemented seafloor surface that forms when calcium carbonate precipitates within the pore spaces of existing sediment, creating a firm, erosion-resistant layer. This process occurs in shallow marine environments where sedimentation rates are low. Hardgrounds often serve as substrates for sessile organisms and can preserve trace fossils.
