Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-007056

A system of railway signaling and point (switch) control that prevents conflicting movements of trains by mechanically or electrically locking signals and points in a safe sequence. It prevents a signal from displaying a clear aspect unless the route ahead is correctly set and locked, and prevents points from being moved under a train. Modern interlocking systems are often computer-based, adhering to strict safety integrity levels.
