A standardized scale for measuring the roughness of a paved road surface, which affects vehicle ride quality, fuel consumption, and tire wear. The International Roughness Index (IRI) is calculated from the accumulated suspension motion of a vehicle traveling along a measured road profile. Values are expressed in meters per kilometer (m/km) or inches per mile, with a newly paved asphalt road having an IRI below 1.5 m/km.
