Lampkeeper

A worker in a mine responsible for the maintenance, distribution, and collection of miners' safety lamps. The duties included cleaning, repairing, and refueling the lamps, as well as keeping records of which lamp was assigned to each miner for a shift. The lampkeeper's station, the lamp cabin, was a controlled environment where lamps were securely locked before being issued, preventing unauthorized tampering that could compromise their safety features.
