Line card

A modular electronic circuit board that connects a telecommunications access network to a central switch, router, or other network device. Each card contains the circuitry to handle one or more external lines, such as telephone lines, Ethernet ports, or fiber optic connections. A line card's primary function is to convert data between the format used on the external line and the format used on the device's internal backplane.
