Magnetic strip

A band of material containing iron-based magnetic particles used to store digital information, also known as a magstripe. Data is encoded by altering the magnetism of tiny particles on the strip, which a magnetic reading head can then decode. This technology is found on credit cards, identification badges, and hotel key cards, with standards like ISO/IEC 7811 defining the physical properties and data structure for financial cards.
