Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-007099

A flat-topped, steep-sided raised region left on a semiconductor wafer when the surrounding material is etched away, so that the devices built on it are electrically isolated from one another. A mesa transistor or diode has its junction edges exposed on the sloping sidewall, which must be passivated, in contrast to the planar process, where oxide covers the junctions.
