Spacistor
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005493
A type of multi-terminal solid-state semiconductor device developed in the 1950s, designed to operate at higher frequencies than the transistors of that era. Its operation was based on injecting minority carriers into a space-charge region of a reverse-biased junction, where a strong electric field would rapidly sweep them to a collector contact. The device offered potential for gigahertz-range operation but was difficult to manufacture and was ultimately superseded by improvements in bipolar junction and field-effect transistor technology.
