Parting sand
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004150
A fine, dry, non-binding sand or powder applied to the meeting surfaces of a two-part sand mould in a foundry. This material prevents the cope (top half) and drag (bottom half) of the mould from sticking together, allowing them to be separated cleanly for pattern removal and core placement. Parting sand is free of clay or other binders and is often composed of silica sand, talc, or calcium carbonate.
