Loam

A molding material used in foundry work, consisting of a mixture of sand and clay with a high clay content, made workable with water. It is applied as a plaster-like paste to a rough structure of brickwork or metal plates to build up large, custom molds without the use of a pattern box. Loam molding is a traditional technique suited for producing very large, one-off castings, such as bells or large industrial machine bases.
