Pedestal coil

A heating radiator formed from several straight pipes joined together and stacked in horizontal rows, one over another, through which steam or hot water passes to warm a room. The term belongs to nineteenth-century steam-heating practice and is unrelated to the coils of wire used in metal detectors. It is recorded in English from 1895.
