Preburner

A small combustion chamber in a staged-combustion rocket engine that burns part of the propellants to make hot gas for driving the turbopumps. The exhaust is then piped into the main combustion chamber, where the remaining propellants are added and burned. The Space Shuttle Main Engine used two fuel-rich preburners ahead of its main chamber.
