Working mass
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006653
The material that a rocket or thruster ejects to produce thrust, also called reaction mass. In a chemical rocket it is the exhaust of the burned propellants, while in an ion engine it is the ionized gas accelerated by electric fields. Thrust follows from the momentum carried away by this mass, so the faster it leaves, the less of it is needed.
