The input winding of a transformer, where the alternating current (AC) voltage is applied, inducing a magnetic field that links to the secondary winding. This winding determines the initial magnetic flux in the transformer core. The number of turns in the primary winding, relative to the secondary, dictates the voltage transformation ratio.
