Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004531

A specialized branch or shoot of a plant that is modified for vegetative reproduction, naturally bending down to the ground and developing roots where it makes contact. Once rooted, the connection to the parent plant withers, leaving an independent clone. This natural layering process is distinct from propagation by cuttings, which involves severing a plant part before inducing root formation, or by runners, which are specialized horizontal stems.
