Sidewinder

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005269

A trawler that tows its net from the side, with the trawl warps led through blocks on two gallows, one forward and one aft, rather than down a ramp at the stern. The type fished deep and middle-distance waters and was the standard British trawler layout for decades. Stern trawlers, which shoot the net over the back, gradually replaced it from the 1960s.
