Spool
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005547
A complete rotating assembly within a gas turbine engine, consisting of a compressor, a connecting shaft, and a turbine that drives it. Multi-spool engines have two or three concentric shafts spinning at different speeds, allowing the low-pressure and high-pressure sections to operate at their individual best efficiencies. For example, a two-spool high-bypass turbofan has a low-pressure spool (N1) for the fan and a high-pressure spool (N2) for the core.
