Suicide battery
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-007296
A battery built into a device so that when its charge runs out the device becomes permanently unusable. Arcade boards such as the CPS2 use a soldered lithium cell to hold a decryption key in volatile memory, and once the cell dies the key is lost and the board no longer runs. Collectors swap the cell while the board is still powered so the stored key survives.
