Wing wall

A shorter retaining wall extending from the end of a larger structure, such as a bridge abutment, culvert, or dam. It serves to hold back the sloped earth embankment and to guide a channel of water into or away from the main opening. Wing walls are constructed at an angle to the main structure, with flare angles ranging from 30 to 75 degrees, and are built of the same material, such as reinforced concrete or masonry.
