Destruction and removal efficiency (DRE)

Term · Insurance and risk management · MLC-T-INS-001151

A percentage that measures the effectiveness of a hazardous waste combustion device, such as an incinerator, in destroying a specific organic hazardous constituent. The destruction and removal efficiency (DRE) is calculated by comparing the mass of the constituent fed into the system with the mass emitted from the stack. Under the U.S. Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), incinerators burning hazardous waste must demonstrate a DRE of at least 99.99% for most compounds.
