Respondeat superior

A doctrine of vicarious liability under which an employer or principal is legally responsible for torts its employee or agent commits within the scope of employment or agency, even when the employer was not at fault. Latin for let the master answer, it underlies employers' exposure to third-party claims covered by general and auto liability insurance. A purely personal errand by the employee falls outside it.
