Bona fide occupational qualification

A characteristic that is reasonably necessary to the normal operation of a particular business or enterprise, allowing for an otherwise discriminatory employment practice. This exception to anti-discrimination laws, such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, is narrowly construed. For example, a religious school may require its teachers to be members of that religion.
