The established and proper routes for communication, requests, or actions within a formal system, such as a government agency, corporation, or the military. Following these prescribed pathways, often in a hierarchical order, is known as "going through channels." Deviating from these procedures can result in a request being denied or a complaint being dismissed on procedural grounds.
