Chevron deference

A principle of administrative law requiring courts to defer to an administrative agency's reasonable interpretation of an ambiguous statute that the agency administers. This doctrine applies when Congress has not directly addressed the precise question at issue. Courts will uphold the agency's interpretation unless it is arbitrary, capricious, or manifestly contrary to the statute.
