Bright-line rule

A clearly defined legal standard or test that is easily applied to a set of facts, without requiring subjective interpretation or balancing of competing interests. These rules aim to provide certainty and predictability in the law. An example is the rule that a contract for the sale of goods over a certain dollar amount must be in writing.
