Continuance

A postponement or adjournment of a court hearing, trial, or other legal proceeding to a later date. A judge grants a continuance based on a motion from one of the parties, often due to unforeseen circumstances, the need for more time to prepare, or the unavailability of a witness. The decision to grant a continuance is at the discretion of the court.
