Controlling interest

A sufficient ownership stake in a corporation or other entity that allows the holder to dictate its management and policies. This typically involves owning more than 50% of the voting shares, but it can also be achieved with a smaller percentage if the remaining shares are widely dispersed. The holder of a controlling interest has fiduciary duties to the minority shareholders.
