Derivation of citizenship

The process by which a child automatically acquires U.S. citizenship through the naturalization of one or both parents. This occurs without the child needing to file a separate application, provided certain conditions are met, such as the child being a lawful permanent resident and residing in the U.S. in the legal and physical custody of the naturalized parent. The Immigration and Nationality Act governs these provisions.
