Endangered Species Act

A major U.S. environmental law enacted in 1973 to provide a framework for the conservation and protection of species at risk of extinction and the habitats they occupy. The Endangered Species Act (ESA) prohibits the unauthorized taking, possession, sale, and transport of listed species and provides for the designation of critical habitat. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service are the primary federal agencies responsible for its implementation.
