An independent agency of the U.S. government tasked with promoting consumer protection and preventing anticompetitive business practices. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) enforces antitrust laws and investigates complaints about deceptive advertising, fraud, and unfair market competition. It was established by the Federal Trade Commission Act of 1914 and is headed by a board of five commissioners appointed by the President.
