The Federal Trade Commission, an independent agency of the United States government established to promote consumer protection and prevent anti-competitive business practices. It enforces antitrust laws and a variety of consumer protection laws, including those related to advertising, marketing, and data privacy. The FTC's authority is derived from the Federal Trade Commission Act of 1914.
