The Family and Medical Leave Act, a federal law that entitles eligible employees of covered employers to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons. This includes the birth or adoption of a child, caring for an immediate family member with a serious health condition, or the employee's own serious health condition. Employees are entitled to up to 12 workweeks of leave in a 12-month period.
