Family and Medical Leave Act

A federal law, abbreviated FMLA, that provides eligible employees with up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave per year for specified family and medical reasons. These reasons include the birth or adoption of a child, caring for a spouse, child, or parent with a serious health condition, or the employee's own serious health condition. The Act applies to employers with 50 or more employees.
(1993) A federal law that entitles eligible employees of covered employers to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons. These reasons include the birth of a child, adoption, foster care placement, care for a spouse, child, or parent with a serious health condition, or the employee's own serious health condition. The Act guarantees the same or an equivalent job upon return from leave.
