Freehold

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-002241

An estate in land of uncertain duration, as distinguished from a leasehold estate for a fixed term. The freehold estates are the fee simple, the fee tail, and the life estate, and historically only a freeholder was said to hold seisin. Rights under a freehold vary with the estate: a fee simple absolute is the largest, while a life estate ends with the life on which it is measured.
