Genericide

The process by which a brand name or trademark loses its distinctiveness and becomes a common descriptive term for a type of product or service. When this occurs, the trademark owner may lose exclusive rights to the name, as it enters the public domain. Examples of terms that have undergone genericide include 'aspirin' and 'thermos'.
