Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act

A federal law that prohibits discrimination based on genetic information in health insurance and employment contexts. The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) forbids health insurers from using genetic information to determine eligibility or premiums and prevents employers from using it in hiring, firing, or promotion decisions. The law is enforced by the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Labor, and the Department of the Treasury.
