Investigatory stops

Brief detentions of individuals by law enforcement officers based on reasonable suspicion that criminal activity is afoot. These stops, also known as Terry stops, allow officers to question suspects and conduct a pat-down for weapons if there is reasonable belief the person is armed and dangerous. They are a limited exception to the warrant requirement of the Fourth Amendment.
