Reasonable suspicion

A legal standard of proof that is less than probable cause but more than a mere hunch, based on specific and articulable facts. This level of suspicion allows law enforcement officers to briefly detain individuals for questioning or conduct a pat-down search for weapons. The Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution governs its application.
